Awards Application

Introduction

The Trustees of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council will honor government agencies, businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals who have helped make New Jersey clean and green at the eighth, annual New Jersey Clean Communities Awards Banquet, May 24, 2012, at Congress Hall in Cape May. To apply for awards, complete the application below and submit online by April 1, 2012.    

Guidelines

Applications must clearly denote the category and award to be considered.  Nominees may be government agencies, businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals, as denoted in the award categories. You may nominate your program or the program of another person. 

Applications must include a one-page summary of the program, project or person nominated.   You may document your nomination with description, photos, or news clips in no more than five pages.  You may be asked to submit additional documentation.

Applications must be submitted online at njclean.org by April 1, 2012. You may mail supplemental material to the Clean Communities Council, 222 West State Street, Trenton, New Jersey 08608. Award winners will be notified by April 15, 2012.

Special consideration will be given to programs or projects that are ongoing, innovative, results oriented, or that may be a model for the entire state. 

Awards  

Category I
(Category I awards are presented to municipalities, counties or public sector employees for implementing outstanding litter abatement programs.)   

Clean Communities Program Awards

These awards are presented to towns and counties implementing outstanding Clean Communities programs.  Programs must be comprehensive, involving the elements of cleanup, enforcement and education.  Municipal awards are presented according to the amount of grant money the agency receives. There are no funding divisions for counties.  More than one award may be presented in each category.  There are four categories:

  1. Municipalities - $4,000- $9,999
  2. Municipalities - $10,000 - $29,999
  3. Municipalities - $30,000 and over
  4. Counties

Cleanup Award

Grant guidelines distributed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection encourage municipalities and counties accepting grant money to implement at least one volunteer cleanup every year.  This award is presented to a municipality or county for a program or project that promotes the cleanup and maintenance of public lands by volunteers.   

Enforcement Award

Grant guidelines distributed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection encourage towns and counties accepting grant money to develop and execute an enforcement strategy that will reduce litter.  This award is presented for a program or project that has enforced litter and solid waste laws. 

Education Award

Grant guidelines distributed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection encourage towns and counties accepting grant money to carry out education programs that will change the attitudes that cause littering and the irresponsible handling of solid waste.  This award is presented to a municipality or county for a program or project that has changed attitudes.  Program may target children or adults.  

Public Works Award

More than 50 percent of the state’s Clean Communities Coordinators are employed in municipal public works departments.  They have many responsibilities other than managing a litter abatement program.  This award is presented to a public works employee who, in addition to many other responsibilities, has developed a comprehensive, broad-based litter abatement program.   

County Coordinator Award

A network of coordinators supports New Jersey Clean Communities.  This award is presented to an individual who has developed and implemented a comprehensive, county-wide litter abatement program; and who demonstrates ongoing support of New Jersey Clean Communities.   

Municipal Coordinator Award

A network of municipal Clean Communities support New Jersey Clean Communities.  This award is presented to an individual who had developed and implemented a comprehensive, town-wide litter abatement program and who demonstrated ongoing support of New Jersey Clean Communities.

Category II  

Category II awards are presented to businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals who best demonstrate spirit and community pride through contributions to New Jersey Clean Communities. 

Stewardship of Public Lands Awards

These awards are presented to businesses, community organizations, schools and individuals who have cleaned and maintained public lands.

  • Public Lands Cleanup Award – This award is presented to a business, community organization, school or individual who has cleaned a roadway, park, playground, ball field, or other parcel of land; or who has cleaned graffiti from public property 
  • Clean Waterway Award – This award is presented to a business, community organization, school or individual who has cleaned a waterway
  • Open Space Award – This award is presented to a business, community organization, school or individual who has cleaned public property considered to be open space. 
  • Adopt-a (road, park, waterway, neighborhood, school,  or other public place award) – This award is presented to a business, community organization, school or individual who has cleaned and maintained public property for at least two years.

Volunteer Award

Volunteers are the cornerstone of New Jersey Clean Communities.  This award is presented to an individual who has donated time or resources to promote clean communities.

     Excellence in Education Award

New Jersey Clean Communities promotes education in order to change the attitudes that cause littering.  This award is presented to a business, community organization, school or individual who has achieved measurable results in reducing litter though education. 

Media Award

Outreach through the press is essential is changing the attitudes that cause littering.  This award is presented to a media outlet or individual who has reinforced media messages. 

Clean Builders Award

Cleaning and maintaining construction sites are critical to New Jersey Clean Communities.  This award is presented to a business for keeping construction sites clean.

Business Partnership Award

Businesses are crucial to the success of New Jersey Clean Communities.  This award is presented to a business who has supported through in-kind or cash donations the activities of the New Jersey Clean Communities Council
